Usually tall plants, sunflowers have roughly textured dark green foliage that ranges from heart-shaped leaves in the larger species down to lance-shaped leaves in the smaller species. Most species have bristly stems. The daisy-like flowers can reach up to 30 cm across, are held above the foliage, and are nearly always yellow. Doubleflowered forms are common.
