Collaroy Name Origin
Collaroy is thought to be named from an Aboriginal word meaning 'long swamp reed' or 'big reeds', or after the steamer which ran ashore on the beach.
Collaroy Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from the 1880s, with land used mainly for farming. Some growth took place during the interwar period, although development was minimal until the post-war years. Significant growth occurred during the 1960s and 1970s. The population increased between 1996 and 2006 as new dwellings were added to the area, particularly high density housing. The population and dwelling stock were relatively stable between 2006 and 2011.
