East Killara Name Origin
East Killara is named for the area east of Killara, which is named from an Aboriginal word meaning 'permanent, always there'.
East Killara Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from the 1820s when timber-getting was established. Land was subdivided in 1888, although sales did not occur until lots were re-offered in 1893, following the opening of the railway line. Land was promoted in 1925, but little development occurred until 1945. Significant development took place in the 1950s and 1960s, with growth beginning to slow in the 1970s and 1980s. The population declined slightly from the early 1990s, a result of relative stability in dwelling stock and a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
East Killara Features
Major features of the area include Garigal National Park, Allan Small Park, Koola Park, Lindfield Soldiers Memorial Park, Sheoak Reserve, East Killara Shopping Centre and one school.
