Killara Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from 1821 when the first land grant was made. Land was used mainly for timber-getting and farming. Little growth occurred until 1890, following the opening of the railway line and the subdivision of estates. From 1895 a community began to develop with a residential, recreational and cultural focus. Some growth took place in the interwar period as large land holdings were subdivided. From the late 1940s many units were built along the Pacific Highway. Significant development took place during the post-war years. The population declined slightly between 1991 and 2006 due to a slight reduction in dwelling stock. The population increased between 2006 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area, particularly high density housing.
Major features of the area include Killara Golf Club, Dalcross Private Hospital, Marian Street Theatre, Alberts Bush, Harry Seidler Reserve, Jinkers Green, Killara Park, Regimental Park, Selkirk Park, St Crispens Green, Terrum-bine Reserve, Ticket of Leave Park, Wombin Nature Reserve and two schools.
