Manly Name Origin
Manly is named after Manly Cove, which was named by Captain Arthur Phillip, who was impressed by the confident and manly behaviour of the male Aborigines he saw when he first visited the area in January 1788.
Manly Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from the early 1800s, although population was minimal until the mid 1850s when a village was established and regular ferry services started. Rapid growth took place from the 1880s as the area became a popular seaside resort. Expansion continued through to the 1920s, spurred by improved access. Significant development occurred from the post-war years, with many apartments and units built during the 1960s and 1970s. The population increased significantly during the 1990s, particularly between 1996 and 2001 as large numbers of new dwellings were added to the area. The population declined between 2001 and 2006 as dwelling occupancy rates declined. The population then increased again between 2006 and 2011 as many high density dwellings were constructed.
Major features of the area include the Manly Town Centre (including Manly Plaza), Manly Wharf, Manly Ferry, Manly Beach, Manly Cove Beach, Gilbert Park, South Steyne Park, Manly Community Centre, Manly Environment Centre, Northern Beaches Council - Manly Customer Service Centre, Manly Swimming Enclosure and several schools.
