Quakers Hill Name Origin
The name Quakers Hill was in an 1806 report of the area by government surveyor James Meehan. The origin of the name is unclear and the next references are more than sixty years later when Thomas Harvey used it for his property in what is now western Quakers Hill.
Quakers Hill Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from 1814, when the first land grant was made. Land was used mainly for farming and market gardening. Growth was minimal until the 1860s, aided by the construction of the railway line. Expansion continued in the early 1900s, spurred by the subdivision of large properties. A commercial centre was established in the 1920s. Significant development occurred in the post-war years, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s. The population continued to increase during the 1990s. Growth began to slow between 2006 and 2011 as fewer new dwellings were added to the area.
