Settlement of the area dates from the 1870s, with land used mainly for farming. Significant development did not take place until the interwar period, when some soldier settlement occurred in Belrose. The most rapid growth occurred during the 1960s and 1970s. In recent years there has been considerable industrial development. The population increased slightly from the mid 1990s as new dwellings were added to the area.
