Pyrmont Name Origin
Pyrmont is thought to be named from an Aboriginal word meaning 'pure and uncontaminated spring', or after the German spa town of Pyrmont.
Pyrmont Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from the 1790s, although growth was minimal until the mid 1800s. The first bridge from the city to Pyrmont opened in 1858, making it easier to transport produce from the market gardens of the inner west to the markets. By the 1890s the population began to decline as more industries became established in the area, due to proximity to the city and to the water. In the early 1900s the area was home to a sugar refinery, electricity powerhouse, flour mills, woolstores, sandstone quarries, shipbuilding and timber yards and railway goods yards. For most of the 1900s Pyrmont was a mix of industrial buildings and terrace style houses. In the mid to late 1900s some of the original houses were demolished to make way for car parks and freeways and many of the factories began to close down and industries moved out. From the 1990s the area began to experience redevelopment, with some old terrace houses restored, and many industrial buildings replaced or converted into residential use. Rapid population growth took place between 1991 and 2006 as large numbers of new dwellings were added to the area. Growth slowed between 2006 and 2011 as fewer new dwellings were added.
Major features of the area include Waterfront Arcade, Sydney Fish Market, The Star (Casino, Hotel & Entertainment Centre), Ballaarat Park, Cadi Park, Giba Park, James Watkinson Reserve, Metcalfe Park, Pirrama Park, Pyrmont Bay Park, Waterfront Park, Pyrmont Bay Marina, Sydney Wharf and Jones Bay Wharf.
