Most species in this genus form a small clump of narrow gray-green to blue-green leaves, while a few develop longer, sometimes wiry stems. From late spring, the flowers are borne singly or in small heads at the tops of wiry stems, and often have a spicy scent. Hugely popular as cut flowers and garden plants, there are thousands of cultivars whose flowers vary greatly in size, color, and pattern.
