St Ives Name Origin
It is not certain why the suburb was named St Ives in 1900 but most likely it was after the town of St Ives in Cornwall or after Isaac Ellis Ives, who was a Member of the Legislative Assembly for St Leonards in 1885-1889 and who worked hard to secure a post office and school for the district.
St Ives Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from 1823 when the first land grant was made. Land was used mainly for timber-getting and saw-milling. Some growth occurred in the 1850s and 1860s when land was sold and many farms and orchards were established. In the 1890s many market gardens were established, mostly by Chinese immigrants. Unlike the rest of the Ku-ring-gai area, St Ives was not affected by the opening of the railway line in 1890 and remained rural until rezoning and development in the 1950s. Significant development took place between 1961 and 1976, when the population trebled. From the 1970s St Ives took over from Gordon as the commercial centre of the municipality. Some medium density housing (townhouses and retirement villages) was built from the 1980s. The population was relatively stable between 1991 and 2006, and then increased between 2006 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area, particularly medium and high density housing.
