Alexandria Name Origin

Alexandria is named after Princess Alexandria, the wife of King Edward VII.

Alexandria Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates primarily from 1868, when many terrace houses and cottages were built. By the early 1900s the area had become predominantly industrial, due to proximity to the rail yards and brick works. Some small residential estates were established on the higher areas in the early 1900s, including the Beaconsfield Estate. The population increased substantially from the early 1990s, particularly from 1996, with the population more than doubling between 1991 and 2011. Growth is due largely to urban renewal, with renovation of many of the original houses, and large scale industrial and warehouse sites replaced with residential and employment uses.

Alexandria Features

Major features of the area include Alexandria Town Hall, NSW Fire Brigade Training College, Alexandria Homemaker Centre, Alexandria Park, Beaconsfield Park, Perry Park, Sydney Park, Alan Davidson Oval, D Dawson Playground, McConville Reserve, the Green Square railway station and Alexandria Park Community School.
