Ashfield Name Origin

Ashfield is thought to be named after an early land holder’s father, the Lord of Ashfield, Scotland.

Ashfield Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates from the 1790s, with land used mainly for farming. Population was minimal until 1838 when land was subdivided and the Village of Ashfield was established. Development took place in the 1850s and 1860s, spurred by the construction of the railway line in 1855. Growth continued in the 1870s and 1880s, with some expansion in the interwar period. Significant development occurred during the post-war years, with many houses demolished and replaced by units and flats. The population was relatively stable during the 1990s, and then increased substantially from 2001, especially between 2001 and 2006, a result of large numbers of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly medium and high density housing.

Ashfield Features

Major features of the area include the Ashfield Town Centre, Ashfield Mall Shopping Centre, Inner West Council Ashfield Service Centre, Bill Peters Reserve and the Ashfield railway station.
