Auburn Name Origin

The suburb was named after Oliver Goldsmith's poem The Deserted Village, which describes 'Auburn' in England as the 'loveliest village of the plain'.

Auburn Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates from the late 1700s when the first land grants were made. Initially settlement was in the northern area, then growth expanded to the south from the 1820s. Residential development was slow until the early 1900s, with some growth during the 1870s and 1880s, aided by the establishment of industries. The most significant development occurred from the 1930s to the 1960s, especially during the post-war period, with substantial subdivision in the 1950s. The population increased between 1991 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area, particularly medium and high density housing.
