Auburn Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from the late 1700s when the first land grants were made. Initially settlement was in the northern area, then growth expanded to the south from the 1820s. Residential development was slow until the early 1900s, with some growth during the 1870s and 1880s, aided by the establishment of industries. The most significant development occurred from the 1930s to the 1960s, especially during the post-war period, with substantial subdivision in the 1950s. The population increased between 1991 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area, particularly medium and high density housing.
Major features of the area include Auburn Hospital, St Joseph’s Hospital, Rosnay Golf Club (Auburn Public Golf Course), Auburn Central Shopping Centre, Auburn Arcade Shopping Centre, Primewest Auburn Megamall, the commercial areas along Parramatta Road, Reading Cinemas Auburn, Auburn Botanic Gardens, Auburn Gallipoli Mosque, Angus Park, Auburn Park, Bangor Park, Bardo Park, Civic Park, Coronation Park, Fraser Park, Harold Moon Reserve, Kulgun Reserve, Mona Park, Norman Park, Northumberland Road Reserve, Oriole Park, Peter Hislop Park, Pine Park, Princes Road Playing Fields, Progress Park, Webbs Avenue Playing Fields and numerous schools.
