Balmain Name Origin
Balmain is named after William Balmain, First Fleet Surgeon, and later Principal Surgeon of the Colony.
Balmain Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from 1800 when the first land grant was made. Land was initially used for cattle grazing and farming. Residential and industrial growth took place from the late 1830s into the 1850s, aided by regular ferry connections from Sydney and the establishment of the shipyards. Rapid development occurred from the mid 1800s into the late 1800s, with growth slowing during the early 1900s. Industrial growth continued from the post-war years, particularly along the foreshore. Residential growth resumed from the 1960s, with gentrification from the 1970s as many industries closed and new or renovated housing was built. The population increased during the late 1990s as new dwellings were added to the area. The population was stable between 2001 and 2006, with the dwelling stock and population increasing slightly again between 2006 and 2011.
