Bellevue Hill Name Origin
Bellevue Hill is named for the views given by the area. It was originally known as Vinegar Hill.
Bellevue Hill Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from 1820 when the first land grant was made, although population was minimal until the 1850s. Land was used mainly for grazing and farming. Growth took place in the late 1800s, with rapid development in the early 1900s, particularly during the 1920s. Expansion continued during the interwar period and the immediate post-war years. The population increased slightly from the mid 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly high density housing.
Bellevue Hill Features
Major features of the area include Bellevue Park, Bradley Avenue Reserve, Cooper Park, March Street Reserve, Thornton Playground, Bellevue Hill Village, The Scots College, Cranbrook School and Bellevue Hill Public School.
