Birchgrove Name Origin

Birchgrove is named after an early property in the area called Birch Grove House.

Birchgrove Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates from 1796 when the first land grant was made. Land was used mainly for orange growing and farming. Population was minimal until 1860 when land was subdivided. Rapid residential and industrial growth took place during the late 1800s, with some growth during the early 1900s. Residential growth resumed from the 1960s, particularly from housing built on previous industrial sites. The population was relatively stable during the 1990s, and then increased slightly between 2001 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area.
