Burwood North Name Origin
Burwood is named after an early property in the area, which was named after a place in Cornwall, England.
Burwood North Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from 1793, with land used mainly for farming and timber-getting. Population was minimal until the 1830s when land was subdivided and a village was established, with Burwood being a staging post along the road between Sydney and Parramatta. Growth took place in the 1850s, spurred by the opening of the Sydney-Parramatta railway line. More substantial growth occurred during the 1870s and 1880s, and again during the early 1900s. Significant development took place from the post-war years through to the 1960s, when many apartments were built. During the early 1970s the population began to decline, then stabilise. The population increased gradually from the mid 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly high density housing.
