Castlecrag Name Origin

Castlecrag is named for the large rocky outcrop in the area which resembles a castle.

Castlecrag Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates from the 1860s, following the auctioning of land in 1856, with land used mainly for market gardens and some weekend homes and boatsheds. The area remained largely undeveloped bushland until subdivision and land sales in the 1880s. Some growth took place in the 1920s when the Greater Sydney Development Association (Walter Burley Griffin’s company) developed 90 acres of land in the southern section, however only a few houses were built. Significant development occurred in the 1950s and 1960s, spurred by the lifting of the covenant that had previously controlled development. The population declined from the late 1960s to the early 1990s, and then increased slightly from the mid 1990s.

Castlecrag Features

Major features of the area include Castlecrag Private Hospital, Quadrangle Shopping Village, Castlecrag Community Centre, Bailey Playground, Castlecrag Northern Escarpment, Cortile Reserve, Linden Way Reserve, Sailors Bay Park, Stoker Playground and one school.
