Chester Hill Name Origin
The name for the suburb was conferred by Mrs H. A. McMillan, who first wished to call the place Hillcrest, after an estate near Regent's Park, and then Hillchester.
Chester Hill Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, with land used mainly for market gardens and orchards. Significant development did not occur until the 1920s, spurred by the opening of the railway line. Rapid growth took place in the immediate post-war years, aided by public housing construction. The population increased slightly from the mid 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly medium density housing.
