Coogee Name Origin

Coogee and North Coogee are named after the lake located to the south of the area, which was named from an Aboriginal word meaning 'body of water'.

Coogee Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates from the 1820s, with a village established in 1838. Population was minimal until the 1880s, aided by the construction of the tram line and tourism. Expansion continued during the 1920s. Significant development occurred in the 1960s and 1970s. The population and dwelling stock were relatively stable between 1991 and 2006, and then increased slightly between 2006 and 2011.
