Cremorne Junction Name Origin

Cremorne is thought to be named after the Cremorne Gardens in London, or from the Gaelic words 'Cre' meaning boundary and 'Morne' meaning chieftain.

Cremorne Junction Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates from 1815 when the first land grant was made, although limited accessibility meant population was minimal until the 1870s. Growth occurred particularly from the 1890s, following the construction of Military Road and the establishment of ferry services from the Harbour. More rapid growth took place from 1903, with some growth during the interwar period. Significant development occurred in the post-war years. In more recent years there have been many medium/high density housing developments (apartments and townhouses). The population increased gradually from the early 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
