Cremorne Point Name Origin
Cremorne Point is named for the peninsula south of Cremorne, which is thought to be named after the Cremorne Gardens in London, or from the Gaelic words 'Cre' meaning boundary and 'Morne' meaning chieftain.
Cremorne Point Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from 1823 when the first land grant was made, although population was minimal until the 1850s. Land was subdivided from the 1870s, however, sales were largely unsuccessful until 1903 when rapid growth occurred. Some growth took place during the interwar period. Significant development occurred in the post-war years. In more recent decades there have been many medium/high density housing developments (apartments and townhouses). The population and dwelling stock generally increased slightly from the early 1990s.
