Cronulla Name Origin

Cronulla is thought to be named from the Aboriginal word Kurrunulla, meaning 'place of pink shells'. It was originally known as Gunnamatta.

Cronulla Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates from the 1820s when the beaches became known. The area grew in popularity as a holiday and picnic spot after the extension of the railway in 1885 and the opening of the steam train in 1911. Rapid growth took place during the 1920s and 1930s when motor cars became popular. In the 1950s and 1960s most of the holiday guest houses were replaced by high rise apartments. The population increased slightly from the early 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly medium and high-density housing.
