Crows Nest Name Origin

Crows Nest is named after an original home in the area.

Crows Nest Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates from 1819 when the first land grants were made. Land was used mainly for farming, orchards and vineyards. Growth took place from the 1870s when land was subdivided, but particularly from the 1890s, following the opening of the North Shore railway line and the establishment of ferry services. Retail and office growth took place from the 1920s. Significant development occurred in the post-war years, with substantial growth in apartments and townhouses from the 1960s, and accompanying commercial growth in the 1970s and 1980s. The population increased substantially between 1991 and 2006, particularly between 2001 and 2006, a result of new dwellings being added to the area, with growth particularly around the St Leonards station from many resort-style apartments. The population was relatively stable between 2006 and 2011, a result of slight dwelling stock loss.
