Croydon Name Origin
Croydon is named after the borough in London.
Croydon Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from 1794 when the first land grant was made, with land used mainly for grazing and orcharding. Population was minimal until the 1850s, spurred by the opening of the railway line and land subdivision. Growth took place during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Expansion resumed from the post-war years through to the 1960s. The population declined marginally during the early 1990s, and then increased slightly between 1996 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area.
Croydon Features
Major features of the area include JD Oates Aquatic Institute, Blair Park, Cheltenham Road Open Space, Keith Smith Park, Monash Parade Playground, Prowse Reserve, Reed Reserve, Sydney Missionary & Bible College, Presbyterian Ladies' College Sydney, Burwood Girls High School and two other schools.
