Darlinghurst Name Origin

Darlinghurst is named in honour of Elizabeth Darling, wife of Governor Ralph Darling, with 'hurst' being an old English word for a wooded area. It was originally called Henrietta Town.

Settlement of the area dates primarily from 1836. Growth took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Gentrification and urban renewal took place from the 1990s. The population increased from the mid 1990s, with the greatest growth between 2001 and 2006, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
