Eveleigh Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from 1794 when the first land grant was made. Land was subdivided in the 1830s, with Eveleigh becoming a major railway site. Significant development occurred during the 1890s and early 1900s, with the area becoming home to many of the city's working men, as well as to industries such as brick making, hat manufacturing and boot making. In more recent years the area has undergone renovation and redevelopment, with many old houses renovated into apartments and town houses, and industrial buildings converted for residential use. The population increased substantially from the mid 1990s, with the population doubling between 1996 and 2011 as large numbers of new dwellings were added to the area.
Major features of the area include Australian Technology Park, Eveleigh Railway Workshops, Erskineville Town Hall, Erskineville Park, Carriageworks (theatre), Green Bans Park, Harry Noble Reserve, South Sydney Rotary Park, Vice Chancellors Oval, the Erskineville, Macdonaldtown and Redfern railway stations and two schools.
