Gordon Name Origin
Gordon is named after Sir James Willoughby Gordon. It was previously known as Lane Cove.
Gordon Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from 1823 when the first land grants were made. Land was used mainly for timber-getting, until the 1840s when orchards and farms were established, and the 1870s when market gardens were established. Gordon was one of the first areas in the municipality to develop, functioning as the centre of the timber-getting and orcharding community. Some growth occurred between 1879 and 1900 as land was subdivided, spurred by the opening of the railway line in 1890. By 1891 Gordon had the highest population in the municipality. Growth continued in the 1920s and 1930s with new subdivisions and community facilities. Rapid development took place from the late 1950s. Growth slowed by the 1970s as St Ives took over as the commercial centre of the municipality. The population generally increased between 1991 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area, particularly medium and higher density housing around the retail centre and near the railway station.
Gordon Features
