Gymea Bay Name Origin
Gymea Bay is named for the water bounded area south of Gymea, which is thought to be named from an Aboriginal word meaning "a giant lily".
Gymea Bay Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, although population was minimal until 1917 when land was first subdivided. However, apart from secluded waterside dwellings, significant development did not occur until the 1950s. The population has been relatively stable since the early 1990s, a result of little change in dwelling stock and the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
Gymea Bay Features
Major features of the area include Coonong Creek Bushland, Gymea Baths Reserve, Gymea Bay Oval, Marina Crescent Reserve, Old School Park, Gymea Bay Baths and Gymea Bay Public School.
