Homebush West Name Origin
Homebush West is named for the area west of Homebush, which was named after an early property in the area. It was originally known as Flemington.
Homebush West Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from 1806 when the first land grant was made. Growth took place from the 1880s into the 1890s as land was subdivided. Expansion continued during the 1920s. From the 1950s many units were built, including public housing. During the 1970s considerable high density housing was constructed. The Sydney Markets were relocated from Haymarket to this area in the mid 1970s, on the former cattle saleyards site. Rapid growth took place from 2001, with the population more than doubling between 2001 and 2011, a result of a large number of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly high density housing.
Homebush West Features
Major features of the area include Sydney's Paddy's Markets, Market Plaza, Homebush West Shopping Centre, Austin Park, Tavistock Reserve and two schools.
