Illawong Name Origin

Illawong is named from an Aboriginal word meaning "between two waters". It was originally known as East Menai.

Illawong Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, with land used mainly for farming. Growth was minimal until the 1880s when its remoteness (being accessed by boat from Como) made it popular for wealthy Sydney people to build holiday houses. Significant development did not occur until 1980 when the first residential subdivision took place. The population increased during the 1990s as new dwellings were added to the area. The population declined slightly between 2001 and 2011, a result of few new dwellings being added and a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.

Illawong Features

Major features of the area include Georges River National Park, Illawong Village Shopping Centre, Blaxland Drive Reserve, Delardes Reserve, Friendship Place Reserve, Heritage Drive Reserve, Thompsons Bay Reserve and a number of schools.
