Kensington Name Origin
Kensington is named after a borough in London.
Kensington Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from 1819 when the first land grant was made. However, land was used largely for water catchment. Population was minimal until the late 1800s. Residential and industrial growth took place in the 1880s. Expansion continued during the early 1900s and the interwar period. Significant development occurred during the post-war years. The population has increased since the early 1990s, particularly between 2006 and 2011, a result of new dwellings being added to the area, largely high density housing.
Kensington Features
Major features of the area include The University of New South Wales (Kensington Campus), National Institute of Dramatic Art, The Australian Golf Club, John Calopedos Memorial Reserve, Gloucester Gardens, Kensington Park, Kensington Rotary Reserve, Kokoda Memorial Park, Les Bridges Playground, Raleigh Park, Wills Playground, Kensington Bowling Club and several schools.
