Kurnell Name Origin
Kurnell is thought to be named after an early settler, John Connell, or from the English pronunciation of an Aboriginal word 'Collonel'.
Kurnell Settlement History
Kurnell was the first landing site on the east coast of Australia by James Cook in 1770 in the ship 'Endeavour'. Settlement of the area dates from 1815 when the first land grant was made. Growth was minimal until the late 1800s when a fishing village was established. The most significant development occurred during the post-war years. The Caltex oil refinery opened in 1955, attracting other large-scale industries with it. The population declined slightly between 1996 and 2006, and then increased slightly between 2006 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area. The Caltex oil refinery closed in 2014, and was converted into an import terminal.
Kurnell Features
