Lidcombe Name Origin

Lidcombe is named after two former Auburn City mayors, Lidbury and Larcombe. It was previously known as Haslams Creek and Rookwood.

Lidcombe Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates from the 1790s, with land used mainly for farming. Growth was slow until the late 1800s, aided by the opening of railway lines and establishment of industries. The most significant development occurred from the interwar period, especially during the post-war years. The population increased from the early 1990s as new dwellings were added to the area, particularly medium and high density housing. Much of the recent growth has been from the housing development on the former Lidcombe Hospital site, which was used as a media village for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
