Lilyfield Name Origin
Popular belief has it that the area was once farmland and was named for the lilies that reportedly grew in the fields. However, its name origin remains unclear.
Lilyfield Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from the 1830s. Residential and industrial growth occurred from the 1870s into the early 1900s. Callan Park Hospital opened in 1876 as an insane asylum, providing psychiatric services until its closure in 2008. Expansion took place from the post-war years into the early 1970s. The population declined slightly during the 1990s, was stable between 2001 and 2006, and then increased between 2006 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area.
