Little Bay Name Origin
Little Bay is named after the bay in the area.
Little Bay Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from the late 1780s, although population was minimal until the late 1800s. Growth took place in the 1880s, when the area was used as a makeshift camp during Sydney's smallpox outbreak. A permanent hospital was built soon after. Significant development occurred during the post-war years, with rapid growth in the 1950s. The population declined substantially between 1991 and 2006, a result of relative stability in dwelling stock and the gradual closure of Prince Henry Hospital. The population increased rapidly between 2006 and 2011 as large numbers of new dwellings were added to the area, particularly high density housing in Landcom’s development on the former hospital site. Growth is expected to continue, largely from the Little Bay Cove development in the north of the suburb.
