Macquarie Park Name Origin

Macquarie Park is named after Macquarie University and the adjacent Macquarie Park Employment Area which were named for former NSW Governor Lachlan Macquarie.

Settlement of the area dates from the early 1800s, with land used mainly for farming and market gardening. Population was minimal until the late 1800s and early 1900s. Significant residential development occurred during the 1960s, accompanied by the establishment of Macquarie University and the Macquarie Park Employment Area. The population increased between 1996 and 2011, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
