Malabar Name Origin
Malabar is named after the M.V. Malabar, which was wrecked nearby in 1931. It was previously known as Brand or Long Bay.
Malabar Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, although population was minimal until the late 1800s. Growth took place in the early 1900s, accompanied by the establishment of two prisons. Rapid growth took place during the 1930s and again in the post-war years. The population declined during the 1990s, and then increased slightly between 2001 and 2011.
