Maroubra Name Origin

Maroubra is thought to be named from an Aboriginal word meaning 'like thunder' or 'windy place', or the name of a beach a few miles south of Koojah.

Maroubra Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates from the 1860s, spurred by wool scouring works on the bay. Residential and commercial growth took place in the early 1900s, particularly during the 1920s and 1930s, aided by the extension of the tram line and land subdivision. Significant development occurred during the post-war years, with many units built in the 1960s and 1970s. The population has increased since the early 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly high density housing.
