Matraville Name Origin

Matraville is named after James Mario Matra, a midshipman on the Endeavour. It was previously known as Cross Roads.

Matraville Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s. Growth took place in the late 1800s, with land used mainly for farming and market gardening. Expansion continued in the early 1900s, particularly during the 1930s, aided by returned soldiers housing and industrial growth. A coal fired power station operated from 1929, and was demolished in the 1980s. Significant development occurred during the post-war years. The population and dwelling stock generally increased slightly from the mid 1990s.
