Melrose Park Name Origin
Melrose Park is named after the aviator, Charles James (Jimmy) Melrose.
Melrose Park Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from 1794 when the first land grant was made. Population was minimal until the 1880s, spurred by the opening of the railway line and land subdivision. Growth continued in the late 1920s. The most significant development took place during the late 1940s and 1950s. In more recent years some of the former factories in Meadowbank have been demolished and replaced by waterfront high-rise apartments. The population increased significantly between 2001 and 2011, a result of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly from the Waterpoint development.
