Middle Cove Name Origin
Middle Cove is named for its location, between Castle Cove and Crag Cove.
Middle Cove Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from 1858 when the first land grants were made, although growth was slow due to isolation, precipitous land and access being limited to the water. Significant development did not occur until the 1950s, following the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Eastern Valley Way. From the late 1950s until the mid 1970s the Greater Sydney Development Association (Walter Burley Griffin’s company), in partnership with the Hooker Corporation, developed the area. The population declined from the late 1970s to the late 1980s, especially in Castle Cove. The population was relatively stable between 1991 and 2006, and then increased slightly between 2006 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area.
