Mortdale Name Origin

Mortdale is named after Thomas Sutcliffe Mort, an original land holder.

Mortdale Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates from the early 1800s when the first land grants were made, with land used mainly for farming. Population was minimal until the 1850s when several farms were established. Growth took place in the 1880s and 1890s, accompanied by the establishment of a brickworks and the opening of the railway line. Expansion continued in the early 1900s, with rapid development during the 1920s. Significant development occurred during the post-war years. The population increased gradually from the mid 1990s as new dwellings were added to the area, particularly medium and high density housing.
