Newtown Name Origin
Newtown is named after a grocery store (New Town Stores) which opened in the area in the 1830s.
Newtown Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from the 1790s, with land used mainly for farming. Population was minimal until the 1830s. Residential, commercial and industrial growth took place from the 1860s into the early 1900s. From the 1970s gentrification occurred, with many commercial and industrial sites converted into housing, and many old houses restored. The population increased gradually from the mid 1990s as new dwellings were added to the area.
