North Sydney Name Origin

North Sydney is named for the area north of the Sydney CBD, which was named by Captain Arthur Phillip after Viscount Sydney, Thomas Townshend, who was British Home Secretary at the time. North Sydney was previously known as St Leonards.

North Sydney Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates from 1836 when the town was laid out. Growth was slow, but steady until the 1880s when a development boom occurred. North Sydney became the major commercial centre of the Council area. The most significant development occurred in the post-war years, particularly during the 1950s and 1960s when many high-rise housing developments were built. The population increased from the early 1990s, particularly between 2001 and 2011, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.

North Sydney Features

Major features of the area include the North Sydney CBD (including Greenwood Plaza, Berry Square, Tower Square, Northpoint Shopping Centre and Mount Street Plaza), TAFE NSW Northern Sydney Institute (Bradfield Senior College), the Council Offices, Sydney Harbour Federation Trust, Civic Centre Park, Kesterton Park, North Sydney Oval, St Leonards Park, Greg Chappell Cricket Centre, Mary MacKillop Place, Don Bank Museum, St Josephs Convent, North Sydney Boys High School, Marist College North Shore, Monte Sant Angelo College, North Sydney Demonstration School, Shore-Sydney Church of England Grammar School, Wenona Girls School, Wenona Junior School, Australian Catholic University (MacKillop Campus) and St Marys Primary School.
