North Turramurra Name Origin
North Turramurra is named for the area north of Turramurra, which is named from an Aboriginal word meaning 'high or big hill'.
North Turramurra Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from the 1850s, with growth around Bobbin Head Road. Population was minimal until the 1890s. The area remained semi-rural with many orchards, dairies and market gardens. Some growth occurred between 1925 and 1930, following subdivision. Significant development took place from 1950, with rapid growth in the 1960s when further subdivision occurred. Growth continued during the 1970s, spurred by zoning changes in the northern area which allowed subdivision of large estates for residential and medium-density purposes. The population increased slightly from the mid 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
North Turramurra Features
Major features of the area include Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, Lady Davidson Private Hospital, North Turramurra Golf Course, Guides NSW Glengarry State Training Centre, Knox Grammar Playing Fields, Bobbin Head Road Bushland, North Turramurra Park, Orange Green, Samuel King Park, Sandakan Park, Terramerragal Reserve and two schools.
