Northbridge Name Origin
Northbridge is named after the stone suspension bridge built in 1892.
Northbridge Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from 1837 when the first land grant was made, although development was slow due to the rough terrain of the area. Some growth took place in the 1880s when land was sold and resold, most of it belonging to the North Sydney Investment and Tramway Company or the North Shore and Middle Harbour Land Company, who were planning to build a tramway and a bridge across Long Bay Gully in order to open up the area for sales of residential land. However, both of these companies went into liquidation in 1892 and the area was not developed as planned. Development remained slow until the 1920s, when the tramway was extended. Significant development occurred in the post-war years. The population increased slightly from the early 1990s as new dwellings were added to the area.
Northbridge Features
Major features of the area include Northbridge Plaza, Northbridge Village, Northbridge Golf Club, Flat Rock Gully, Coachwood Forest, Northbridge Baths, War Memorial Playing Fields, Clive Park, John Roche Park, Munro Park, Northbridge Park, Warners Park, Sydney Church of England Grammar School and two other schools.
