Northmead Name Origin
Northmead is named for its location - the north mead (meadow) of the Parramatta Government Domain when the New South Wales Governor was based in Parramatta.
Northmead Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from the early 1800s, when convict farming settlements were established. Some growth took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s, particularly during the 1920s, aided by improvements in access and transport. The most significant development occurred in the post-war years. The population increased from the mid 1990s, particularly between 2001 and 2011 as new medium and high density dwellings were added to the area, especially around Balmoral Road and Briens Road.
Major features of the area include Northmead Shopping Centre, Armagh Park, Arthur Phillip Park, Backhousia Reserve, Bidjigal Reserve, Burlington Memorial Park, Charles Herbert Reserve, Excelsior Reserve, Hammers Road Reserve, Hospital Farm Reserve, Moxham Park, Northmead Reserve, Otto Losco Reserve, Robin Hood Park, Tartoola Reserve, Toongabbie Creek Reserve, Whitehaven Park, Willsford Homes Playground, Winton Avenue Reserve, James Ruse Business Park and several schools.
