Paddington Name Origin

Paddington is named after a former estate in the area, which was thought to be named after a borough in England.

Paddington Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates from the 1810s when the first land grant was made, although population was minimal until the late 1830s. Land was used mainly for farming and market gardening. Rapid growth took place from the 1870s to the 1890s, when many cottages and terrace houses were built. Expansion continued in the early 1900s, particularly during the 1920s. Some growth took place in the post-war years, due mainly to gentrification. The population declined slightly between 1991 and 2006, and then increased slightly between 2006 and 2011.
