Port Hacking Name Origin
Matthew Flinders and George Bass explored there in early April 1796. They called it Port Hacking after Henry Hacking who was the principal game hunter in the colony and who first told them of a large river he had seen inland on kangaroo hunting expeditions.
Port Hacking Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from the 1850s, although population was minimal until the late 1800s. Significant development did not occur until the 1950s and 1960s. The population fluctuated slightly from the early 1990s, a result of small changes in dwelling stock and the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
Port Hacking Features
Major features of the area include Dolans Bay Marina, Wally's Wharf, Shamrock Aquatic Reserve and Little Turriell Point.
